The Government Technical Training Centre, Guindy, Chennai – 32 was established in the year 1962 and offering 3 Year Diploma Courses in Mechanical Engineering for more than 50 years, in the specialised branches of Tool and Die Engineering and Refrigeration and Air Conditioning at Guindy, Chennai. The Institute offers following diploma course for three year period.
- DME (Tool & Die)
- DME (Refrigeration & Air-Conditioning)
These courses are conducted with approval of AICTE and the institution is giving admission for 144 students (120 students in regular first year + 24 students in lateral second year) in Diploma in Mechanical Engineering every year. An additional new building construction work is completed at a cost of Rs. 7.02 crore as per the announcement made by Hon’ble Chief Minister to fulfil the norms of AICTE and inaugurated on 04.03.2017.
The Institute of Tool Engineering, Dindigul was established in 1961 and offers 3 year Diploma in Tool & Die Course which is approved by the AICTE. The Institute is giving admission for 54 students (45 students in regular first year + 9 students in lateral second year) in Diploma in Mechanical Engineering every year.
The Government Scientific Glass Training Centre, Coimbatore is imparting practical training to students in the manufacture of Scientific Glass Apparatus. The qualification is a pass in 8th standard. For regular course, the duration is 11 months and 2 months for short term course.
The Government Production Centre for Scientific Glass Apparatus, Coimbatore was established in the year 1972. This unit is engaged in the manufacture of Scientific Glass Apparatus to cater to the needs of glasswares for laboratories functioning under Agriculture, Forensic Science, Industries and Commerce and Health Department.
Government have set up a Ceramic Industrial Estate in the year 1964 at Vridhachalam for the benefit of ceramic manufacturers. There are about 64 industrial sheds in the industrial estate and these sheds are rented to ceramic manufacturers. Industries located in this industrial estate are engaged in the manufacture of LT insulations, ceramic toys, Refractories and other ceramic products.
a) Testing Facilities
The Central Electrical Testing Laboratory (CETL) established under the Department of Industries and Commerce by the State Government at Kakkalur in Tiruvallur District in the year 1973 to cater to the needs of Micro, Small and Medium Electrical and Electronics Enterprises and Quality Marking Organizations.
CETL, Kakkalur is accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL), Department of Science and Technology, Government of India and recognized by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Government of India.
CETL offers testing facilities to the entrepreneurs of electrical products and equipped to test 160 electrical wiring accessories & electrical appliances as per the Indian Standard Specifications for the benefit of Micro, Small and Medium enterprises in the State. This laboratory is being strengthened periodically to maintain the status of accreditation / recognition. The electrical products collected from the market by the designated officers of Quality Control Order Enforcement Centre are also tested in the laboratory. Government of Tamil Nadu has appointed this Laboratory as a quality consultant for the purchase of electrical goods by the Government Departments / Quasi - Government Organizations, reiterated in G.O.(2D)No.2 Small Industries (E III) Department dt.11.1.2000, originally issued in G.O.Ms.No.850, Industries (Spl) dt.15.6.1974 and in G.O.Ms.No.712, Industries dt.6.6.81.
b) Training on Testing of Electrical Products
In order to improve the quality of electrical products manufactured in the State, training is imparted to the manufacturers by the Central Electrical Testing Laboratory, Kakkalur. The test facilities available at CETL, Kakkalur are utilized to demonstrate practical exposure about the training to the participants. So far 341 personnel from various organizations have been benefited from the training imparted at CETL, Kakkalur.
Training courses offered for the testing of the following items:
1. PVC Cables, 2. Food Mixers, 3. Ceiling Fans, 4. Switches, 5. Plug & Sockets, 6. Tubular Fluorescent Lamps, 7. Starters for Tubular Fluorescent Lamps 8. Ballast for Tubular Fluorescent Lamps, 9. Energy Meters, 10. Immersion Water Heaters, 11. Storage Water Heaters, 12. PVC Conduits and 13. Electrical Fittings.
There are 5 Chemical Testing Laboratories located at Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore, Salem, and Thoothukudi. These laboratories are equipped with modern and sophisticated instruments required for testing of raw material and finished goods to meet the needs of chemical, metallurgical and construction sector. These laboratories undertake testing of materials such as steel, cement, brick, water, sand, rubber, ores and minerals, lime, bleaching powder, coal, etc., and these facilities are provided at nominal testing charges.
Further, Micro and Small Enterprises holding Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum (UAM) are extended 50% concession in testing charges. A technical library with 20,000 I.S. Specifications, 6,100 Books and 20 Journals are available at the Chennai laboratory, for the use by the entrepreneurs.
